Ark Encounter and Creation Museum: Complete Guide to Planning Your Visit

Planning a trip to the Ark Encounter and wondering if the Creation Museum is worth visiting too? We had the same questions when my dad told us that visiting the Ark Encounter in Kentucky had always been on his bucket list. After researching the area and spending two days exploring both attractions, we discovered that a little planning goes a long way toward making the experience more enjoyable.

While the Ark Encounter is the main attraction for most visitors, we found that visiting the Creation Museum first gave us a much better understanding of the biblical story before stepping aboard the life-size Ark. Looking back, we’re glad we allowed enough time to fully experience both attractions rather than trying to rush through them in a single day.

In this guide, I’ll share the practical tips we learned during our visit, including which attraction to visit first, how much time to allow, where to stay, where to eat, and other helpful advice to make your trip easier to plan. Is the Ark Encounter Worth Visiting?

The short answer is yes – especially if you enjoy unique attractions, biblical history, or immersive experiences.

When my dad told us that visiting the Ark Encounter had always been on his bucket list, we knew we wanted to make the trip special. After researching the area, we decided to visit both the Ark Encounter and the nearby Creation Museum.

We quickly realized that these two attractions work well together. Visiting both provides a more complete experience and allows you to better understand the story behind the Ark.

The Ark Encounter is much more than a quick roadside attraction. The life-size replica of Noah’s Ark is impressive before you even walk inside.

Built according to the dimensions described in the Bible, the Ark is 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high. Seeing the massive structure in person gives you a true appreciation for its size and craftsmanship.

Inside the Ark, you will find three levels of exhibits. The displays focus on Noah, his family, the animals, and what life may have been like aboard the Ark. Exhibits include interactive displays, videos, and recreated scenes.

One thing that surprised us was how much time we spent exploring the Ark. The size of the attraction is easy to underestimate.

We recommend allowing at least five to six hours for your visit. This gives you time to explore the exhibits, take photos, enjoy the shops, and see the surrounding attractions.

Should You Visit the Creation Museum Too?

Yes, we recommend visiting the Creation Museum along with the Ark Encounter. While the Ark Encounter is the attraction that most visitors know about, the Creation Museum provides important background and context.

The Creation Museum helped set the stage for our visit to the Ark Encounter. The exhibits provide a timeline of creation, the Garden of Eden, Noah’s flood, and other biblical events. After walking through the museum, we had a better appreciation for the message and purpose behind the Ark Encounter.

The museum features a variety of exhibits, including:

• The Garden of Eden and The Flood with immersive displays and recreations
• Creation science exhibits
• Dinosaur exhibits
• A 4-D Special Effects Theater
• The Stargazer Planetarium (additional fee)
• Dr. Crawley’s Insectorium

One thing we appreciated about the Creation Museum was the variety of experiences available. It is not just an indoor museum. You can also enjoy the beautiful outdoor areas, including walking trails, botanical gardens, butterfly house, Zip Lining (additional fee), and Creation Zoo experiences.

We recommend allowing at least four hours to visit the Creation Museum. If you want to participate in additional activities, such as the planetarium, zoo experiences, or zip lines, plan for more time.  90-minute Guided Tours are also available and are an add-on to your Creation Museum admission.

For our family, visiting the Creation Museum first made the Ark Encounter experience more meaningful. It helped us understand the connection between the two attractions and made the entire trip feel more complete.

If your schedule allows, we recommend visiting both attractions. Together, they create a unique two-day Kentucky experience.

Can You Visit Both the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum in One Day?

Technically, yes. However, we do not recommend it.

Both the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum are large attractions that require several hours to fully experience. Trying to visit both in one day will likely leave you feeling rushed.

The Creation Museum alone requires at least four hours. The Ark Encounter requires even more time, with most visitors needing five to six hours to explore the exhibits, take photos, and enjoy the surrounding attractions.

The two attractions are also about 45 minutes apart. This travel time needs to be included when planning your day.

For this reason, we recommend allowing two days for your visit. This gives you time to enjoy each attraction without feeling like you need to hurry.

A two-day visit also allows you to stay overnight near the Ark Encounter. This makes it easier to arrive early, avoid a long drive after a full day of sightseeing, and enjoy nearby restaurants in the evening.

During our trip, we visited the Creation Museum first and then stayed overnight in Dry Ridge before visiting the Ark Encounter the following morning. This schedule worked very well for us and made the entire experience more relaxing.

Our Recommended 2-Day Ark Encounter and Creation Museum Itinerary

This itinerary worked very well for us and gave us enough time to explore both attractions at a comfortable pace.

Day 1: Creation Museum and Overnight Stay Near the Ark Encounter

Morning or Early Afternoon: Creation Museum

Start your trip at the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky. We recommend arriving earlier in the day so you have plenty of time to explore the exhibits, gardens, and outdoor areas.

Plan on spending at least four hours here. If you want to visit the planetarium, enjoy animal experiences, or participate in additional activities, allow extra time.

Late Afternoon: Drive to Dry Ridge

After visiting the Creation Museum, drive approximately 45 minutes to Dry Ridge, Kentucky.

We chose to stay in Dry Ridge because it is close to the Ark Encounter and offers several hotel and restaurant options.

Evening: Dinner and Relax

After checking into your hotel, enjoy dinner nearby and get ready for your visit to the Ark Encounter the next day.

Day 2: Ark Encounter

Morning: Arrive Early at the Ark Encounter

We recommend arriving when the Ark Encounter opens. This gives you more time to explore and helps you avoid larger crowds.

After parking, you will take a 10-minute up-hill shuttle bus ride from the Admissions Center to the Answers Center.  This is the starting point for the attraction.  We recommend watching a presentation or film in the Answers Center Auditorium. From there, it is a 10-minute walk to the star of the show, the Ark.

Explore the Ark Encounter

Plan to spend five to six hours visiting the Ark Encounter. Take your time walking through all three decks and exploring the exhibits.

Be sure to allow time for:

• Photos outside the Ark
• The exhibits inside the Ark
• The Ararat Ridge Zoo
• The Virtual Reality Experience
• Shopping and dining

Afternoon: Continue Exploring or Begin Your Journey Home

Depending on your schedule, you can spend additional time at the Ark Encounter or begin your trip home.

If you are traveling with children or participating in additional activities, you may want to stay a second night and enjoy a more relaxed schedule.

Planning two days made our visit much more enjoyable. We never felt rushed, and we were able to truly appreciate both attractions.

14 Tips for Visiting the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum

Based on our experience visiting both attractions, these tips will help you plan a smoother and more enjoyable trip.

The Ark Encounter and Creation Museum are large attractions. A little preparation will help you make the most of your visit.

1. Visit the Creation Museum First

If you are visiting both attractions, we recommend starting with the Creation Museum.

The museum provides background and context before you visit the Ark Encounter. We found that seeing the exhibits first helped us better understand the story behind the Ark.

2. Visit During the Week if Possible

Both attractions can become crowded, especially during weekends and peak travel periods.

We visited the Creation Museum on a Monday afternoon and the Ark Encounter on a Tuesday morning. Although both were busy, we were able to comfortably explore the attractions.

Arriving early and visiting during the week can help you avoid some of the larger crowds.

3. Purchase the Combo Ticket if Visiting Both Attractions

If you plan to visit both attractions, the combo ticket is the best option.

The ticket allows admission to both the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter within a seven-day period. This gives you flexibility when planning your itinerary.

Tickets can be purchased online in advance or at each attraction.

Be sure to check the official websites for the most current ticket prices, military discounts, and special events.

4. Allow Enough Time for Each Attraction

One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is trying to rush through both attractions.

The Creation Museum requires at least four hours to explore. The Ark Encounter requires even more time, with most visitors needing five to six hours.

5. Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes

You will do a lot of walking during your visit.

The Creation Museum has indoor exhibits, outdoor gardens, walking trails, and animal experiences. The Ark Encounter also requires walking between the parking area, the Answer Center, and the Ark itself.

Comfortable shoes will make a big difference.

Both attractions provide benches and seating areas if you need a break. Wheelchairs, electric convenience vehicles, and strollers are also available for an additional fee.

6. Plan for the Weather

The weather can have a big impact on your experience.

Both attractions include outdoor walking areas, and you will spend time walking between buildings, exhibits, and transportation areas.

At the Ark Encounter, you will walk from the parking area to the Admissions Center, take a shuttle bus to the Answer Center, then walk to the Ark. At the Creation Museum, the outdoor gardens and walking trails are part of the experience.

During warmer months, bring sunscreen, water, and a hat. During cooler months, dress in layers since you will move between indoor and outdoor areas.

Comfortable clothing and good walking shoes will make your visit much more enjoyable.

7. The weather can have a big impact on your experience.

One of the surprises during our visit was how much there was to explore outside the Creation Museum.

The grounds include beautiful gardens, paved walking paths, waterfalls, a lake, and nature trails.

You can also enjoy the Butterfly House and the Animal Encounters and other outdoor activities.

If you visit during nice weather, plan extra time to enjoy these areas. They are a relaxing break between indoor exhibits.

8. Plan Your Meals Ahead of Time

Food options are available at both attractions, so you do not need to leave the property for meals.

At the Creation Museum, options include:

• Noah’s Café
• Noah’s Coffee and Ice Cream
• Palm Café
• Tree of Life Café

At the Ark Encounter, dining options include:

• Emzara’s Kitchen
• The Village Smokehouse
• Southwest Grill
• Zofar’s
• Olive Leaf Café

Hours vary by season, so check schedules before your visit.

We recommend planning your meal times so you do not miss exhibits or scheduled activities.

9. Arrive Early at the Ark Encounter

The Ark Encounter is a popular attraction, and arriving early can make your visit easier.

When we visited, we arrived at the Admissions Center at 9:00 a.m. There was already a line for the shuttle buses.

The shuttle ride takes less than 10 minutes, but arriving early gives you more time to explore.

Once you arrive at the Ark, take time to enjoy the outside views before heading inside. The size of the structure is impressive and there are many great photo opportunities.

10. Take Time to Explore the Ark Encounter

The Ark Encounter is much larger than many visitors expect.

The life-size replica of Noah’s Ark is 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high. Before entering, take time to walk around the outside and appreciate the size of the structure.

Inside the Ark, there are three levels of exhibits.

• Deck 1 focuses on the construction of the Ark, storage areas, and the animals.
• Deck 2 explores the world before the flood and Noah’s preparation.
• Deck 3 shares what life may have been like for Noah and his family aboard the Ark.

Be sure to see The Door while visiting. It is one of the most memorable photo opportunities at the attraction.

11. Consider Adding the Additional Experiences

The Ark Encounter offers more than just the Ark itself.

Depending on your interests and available time, consider adding some of these experiences:

• Ararat Ridge Zoo – Visit animals including alpacas, kangaroos, goats, camels and more.
• Virtual Reality Experience – Step into a virtual journey that explores Noah’s time.
• Screaming Eagle Zip Lines and Aerial Adventure – Enjoy an outdoor adventure with views of the surrounding area.

Some activities require an additional fee or reservation, so check availability before your visit.

12. Plan Ahead If You Need Mobility Assistance

The Ark Encounter and Creation Museum require a significant amount of walking.

Wheelchairs and electric convenience vehicles (ECVs) are available for rent at both locations for an additional fee.

If you need assistance, consider renting equipment when you arrive. Availability can vary, especially during busy travel periods.

There are benches and seating areas throughout both attractions, allowing you to take breaks when needed.

13. Fly Into Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport

If you are flying to visit the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum, the closest airport is Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG).

The Creation Museum is approximately 15 minutes from the airport. The Ark Encounter is about 45 minutes away.

Renting a car is the easiest way to visit both attractions. It also gives you flexibility to explore nearby areas during your trip.

14. Give Yourself Time to Enjoy the Experience

The Ark Encounter and Creation Museum are not attractions you want to rush through.

The best visits happen when you allow yourself time to explore, take photos, enjoy the exhibits, and experience the details.

Our biggest recommendation is to slow down and enjoy the journey. This trip was especially meaningful for our family because we were able to share it with my dad and check an important item off his bucket list.

Choosing the right hotel can make a big difference when visiting the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum.

Since we planned to visit the Creation Museum first and spend a full day at the Ark Encounter, we wanted to stay closer to the Ark rather than drive back toward Cincinnati after a busy day.

We chose Dry Ridge, Kentucky, because it offered convenient access to the Ark Encounter, several hotel options, and nearby restaurants. Staying overnight made our visit much more relaxed and allowed us to arrive early the next morning.

Hampton Inn Dry Ridge

During our visit, we stayed at the Hampton Inn Dry Ridge.

We chose this hotel because of its convenient location, easy access from Interstate 75, and included free breakfast. Having breakfast available made our morning easier because we could start the day early and arrive at the Ark Encounter when it opened.

The hotel is approximately 10 minutes from the Ark Encounter and close to several restaurants.

Hampton Inn & Suites Williamstown Ark Encounter

If your priority is being as close as possible to the Ark Encounter, this hotel is a convenient choice.

Its location makes it easy to arrive early and spend a full day exploring the attraction without a long drive.

The Lodges at Eden Reserve

If you’re traveling with family and looking for a spacious, comfortable place to stay near the Ark Encounter, consider The Lodges at Eden Reserve. The property is located less than three miles from the Ark. These modern cabins have two-bedrooms, two-baths including a full kitchen and living room with a sofa bed. Perfect for relaxing after a day at the Ark!

The Lodges also have walking trails, a playground and a barbecue. It’s an ideal choice if you want both convenience and a home-away-from-home experience.

Where to Eat Near the Ark Encounter

After a full day visiting the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum, you will appreciate having convenient dining options nearby.

Dry Ridge and Williamstown offer several restaurants within a short drive of the Ark Encounter. Options include casual restaurants, fast food, and family-friendly dining.

During our visit, we had dinner at LaRosa’s Pizza in Dry Ridge and enjoyed our meal. It was a convenient option after a busy day of sightseeing, and they also offer a bar area.

Other nearby options include familiar favorites such as Cracker Barrel and Waffle House, which are good choices when you want a reliable meal.

While visiting Williamstown, we also noticed El Jalisco Mexican Restaurant, which is located close to the Ark Encounter.

Food options can change over time, so we recommend checking current hours and availability before your visit.

A simple planning tip: if you are staying overnight near the Ark Encounter, having dinner nearby makes the evening much easier after spending several hours exploring the attractions.

Things to Do Near the Ark Encounter

If you are spending more than one day in the area, consider adding another nearby attraction to your itinerary.

After visiting the Creation Museum, we had a few hours before heading to our hotel. Since we were in Kentucky, we decided to explore the local bourbon tradition and visit a distillery.

Visit Neeley Family Distillery

About 35 minutes south of the Creation Museum is the Neeley Family Distillery in Sparta, Kentucky.

This family-owned distillery offers you a chance to learn about the history of moonshine and Kentucky spirits. The Neeley family has been distilling for generations, and their story is an interesting part of the experience.

When we arrived, the scheduled tours had already ended. However, we were able to participate in a spirits tasting, which turned out to be a fun way to end our day.

I do not typically drink liquor, so the tasting experience was new for me. The hosts, Tom and Wade, took the time to explain the different spirits and how to properly enjoy the tasting.

We sampled a variety of products, including Kentucky moonshine, bourbon, rye whiskey, flavored whiskeys, cream liqueurs, and absinthe. We enjoyed the experience so much that we even left with a few bottles of our own.

Tours and tastings are available on select days and times. Since schedules can change, check the distillery’s current information before planning your visit.

Whether you enjoy bourbon, history, or unique local experiences, adding a nearby attraction can make your Kentucky trip even more memorable.

Visit the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

If you are flying into Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) or extending your trip, consider visiting the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

Located about 1 hour and 30 minutes from the Ark Encounter, it is the world’s oldest and largest military aviation museum. Admission and parking are both free, making it an excellent stop for families and history enthusiasts.

The museum features more than 350 aircraft and missiles, along with presidential aircraft, space exhibits, and interactive displays. You can easily spend several hours or days) exploring the museum.

We were amazed by the size of the collection and the history behind many of the aircraft. If you enjoy aviation or American history, this museum is well worth adding to your itinerary.
