33 Best Day Trips from Naples Florida
Our 33 best day trips from Naples Florida are a perfect way to see what Southwest Florida has to offer. We have organized them based on their locations within the region.
Ave Maria, Florida
Distance from downtown Naples: less than an hour
1. Ave Maria Oratory
This is a very interesting town about 36 miles east of Naples on the edge of the Everglades. Ave Maria is relatively new with a beautiful church in the center of the town.
Built in 2007, the Ave Maria Oratory is a Roman Catholic Church. The church is magnificent and well worth the trip to tour it.
If you have an appreciation for Frank Lloyd Wright, it might intrigue you to learn that the steel design concept of the church was inspired by one of his students, E. Faye Jones. The front façade has a 30-foot marble sculpture of the Archangel Gabriel speaking to Mary. The 12 apostles, in gilded bronze colored gold, appear under the marble sculpture.
As you enter the church, the sheer size and simplicity strikes you. From the Baptismal Font to the Sanctuary, there is so much to see.
The 23-foot-tall Crucifix and its suspended arrangement, which creates two distinctive shadows, left me in awe. It gives the impression of the two criminals who were next to Jesus at the crucifixion.
The best way to truly appreciate your visit to the church is take a self-guided tour or a guided tour. The self-guided tour brochure is available in the Welcome Center across the street from the church on Annunciation Circle. For the guided tour, please see below.
➡️Guided Tours are available. Call: (239) 261-5555 or send an email to: Tours@AveMariaParish.org

Across the street from the Ave Maria Oratory, is the Ave Maria University. Within the university is the Mother Teresa Museum located in the Thomas and Selby Prince Building.
The museum has 30 panels in English and Spanish telling Mother Teresa’s story as well as a collection of Mother Teresa’s handwritten letters.
There is also a 15-minute video about Mother Teresa and her life in Calcutta. The experience is profound and humbling.

6. Matlacha
Matlacha, pronounced Mat-La-Shay, is a charming and colorful (literally) town located on a small island (very small) between Cape Coral and Pine Island. What makes Matlacha particularly captivating is its vibrant, artistic atmosphere and its distinctive “Old Florida” charm.
The town is renowned for its quirky, brightly painted buildings and local art galleries that showcase the talents of the many artists who call Matlacha home. Stop by the Lovegrove Gallery and Garden to view the artwork of the internationally known artist, Leoma Lovegrove. The garden is fascinating, and you can take an art class if so inclined!
It is important to note that in 2022, Matlacha was devastated by Hurricane Ian and is rebuilding. Most of the shops and galleries, as well as some eateries on the main street, have reopened and would love our support.
If you are seeking a relaxing and picturesque escape that offers a taste of authentic Florida culture, Matlacha is a must-visit destination.
7. Cabbage Key
Cabbage Key is a charming and secluded island off Florida’s Gulf Coast. It is accessible by water taxi. I would recommend using Island Girl Charters from Pine Island to Cabbage Key. The boat ride is about 20 minutes and provides great views of the surrounding waters and lush mangrove forests.
Known for its natural beauty, Cabbage Key has no cars and only a restaurant and an inn. The island is most famous for the historic Cabbage Key Inn and Restaurant, where dollar bills from patrons have been hanging from the walls for decades. I would advise making reservations in advance, especially during high season – December through April.
Once you get to the island, you can explore the nature trails, relax on the beach, or have a meal at the restaurant. It is a tranquil getaway that captures the “Old Florida” feeling. This a perfect day trip from Naples for anyone seeking a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the mainland.

While we were waiting for our tour to begin, we toured the Edison Ford Museum. There are exhibits about the inventions and discoveries of Edison, including the phonograph and the incandescent light bulb.

Visiting Naples Florida: FAQs
As you can see, there are a lot of day trips from Naples to enjoy while visiting Southwest Florida. In preparing for your trip, the following are answers to some of the most asked questions about visiting Naples Florida.
How many days in Naples is enough?
The ideal length of your stay in Naples, Florida, largely depends on your preferences and the activities you wish to enjoy. A weekend getaway of two to three days is sufficient to experience the city’s beautiful beaches, explore the downtown area, and enjoy the many restaurants.
However, for a more comprehensive experience, especially if you want to play golf, and take a few day trips from Naples, then a weeklong stay would allow you to fully enjoy this Gulf Coast paradise.
What is the best month to visit Naples, Florida?
The best month to visit Naples, Florida, is typically from November to April. This period offers pleasant weather with mild temperatures and lower humidity. However, it’s important to note that this is the high tourist season, so accommodations can be more expensive, and popular attractions may be crowded.
If you prefer a quieter and more budget-friendly experience, you might consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of May to June or September to October.
What is better Naples or Bonita Springs?
The choice between Naples and Bonita Springs ultimately depends on your preferences and priorities. Naples is known for its upscale amenities, beautiful beaches, classy downtown, and cultural attractions, making it a prime destination for those seeking luxury and a lively atmosphere.
On the other hand, Bonita Springs offers a more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere with scenic natural beauty, especially along the Estero Bay and Imperial River, which is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and those looking for a quieter escape.
Each destination has its unique charm, so the better choice depends on what kind of experience you’re seeking.
Do I need a car in Naples?
Having a car in Naples, Florida, is convenient for exploring the area, especially if you plan to visit nearby attractions or take day trips from Naples. While there are public transportation options, they may be limited for some destinations.
However, if you intend to primarily stay in the downtown area and enjoy the local beaches and restaurants, you can manage without a car, as many amenities are within walking or biking distance.
Your choice of needing a car largely depends on your planned activities and the level of convenience you prefer during your stay.
