Interestingly, in the early 1900s, Bonita Springs was originally named Survey. However, developers later opted for a more marketable identity, leading to the renaming of the town to Bonita Springs.

Visit Old Town Bonita Springs – Things To Do in Bonita Springs, Florida
Bonita Springs has a charming, historic downtown which is walkable. The following sites are within the downtown district.
1. Bonita Springs Historical Society – McSwain House
The Bonita Springs Historical Society is in the McSwain House. This house is the oldest home in Bonita Springs, built in 1915. You can tour the McSwain House which is small but loaded with historical artifacts. The Historical Society staff will be happy to tell you about the property as well as the other homes in the downtown area.
The McSwain House is the only property open to the public, free of charge. Also wander around the gardens and check out the Seminole Chickee Hut in the backyard.
Make sure you pick up the Selected Historic Properties of Bonita Springs booklet. It has a map of the downtown along with a list of the historical homes and buildings. You can follow the map and easily walk around the town. Please keep in mind, the historic homes are still privately owned except for the McSwain House. The House is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm.
2. Riverside Park in Downtown Bonita Springs
This is the main gathering spot in downtown Bonita Springs on Old 41. Throughout the year, there are festivals like art shows, brew fests, holiday celebrations, cultural events, movie nights in the park, and live music from the Bandshell.
Across the street is a beautiful Banyan Tree as well as the Rooftop at Riverside . Here, you can enjoy a drink and a meal from the food trucks.

3. CGT Kayaks and Historical Cottages
The Imperial River meanders through the heart of downtown Bonita Springs, providing an ideal setting for a tranquil kayak or stand-up paddleboard adventure. Here, you can enjoy the natural wonders of Southwest Florida. Just a short distance from Riverside Park, you’ll find six charming bungalow cottages, constructed in 1945, along the riverbank.
These historic structures now house artist shops and serve as the home base for CGT Kayaks. If you’re planning to embark on a paddling excursion, please note that all CGT Kayaks reservations must be made online. Rest assured, they’ll ensure everything is prepared and ready for your arrival.
4. Liles Hotel Historic Plaza
The Liles Hotel was built in 1927 by Wallace Liles and was used as a fishing camp for tourists. The six bungalow cottages, behind the hotel, were originally fishing shacks. In 2006, the city of Bonita Springs gave the Historical Society permission to occupy the hotel. You are welcome to visit, free of charge, to view the historical displays and exhibits on the first floor. A history resource center is on the second floor.
Note: At present, the Liles Hotel is closed due to damage from Hurricane Ian in 2022. Once the repairs are completed, the property will reopen to the public. In the meantime, you can still walk around the plaza to view the hotel, fountain, and bungalow cottages along the Imperial River.
5. Wonder Gardens
I have lived in Bonita Springs for over 10 years, and finally visited Wonder Gardens, and was pleasantly surprised. Opened in 1936, this is a combination of botanical gardens and zoo for rescued and non-releasable animals. The gift shop and museum are housed in the original wooden building.
This is a great place for families to roam around and enjoy the variety of wildlife, including the pink flamingos!!! The Wonder Gardens are open daily from 9am to 3pm. On the first Sunday of every month, residents of Bonita Springs (with valid ID) can enter for free.
6. Shangri-La Springs
Established in 1921, this boutique hotel holds a rich history and offers health-centric amenities. The presence of a mineral spring on-site inspired the city’s name, Bonita Springs. Shangri-La Springs stands as a historic hotel featuring an organic health spa, known as The Spa, and a farm-to-table restaurant named Harvest & Wisdom. You can explore the hotel, book spa treatments, and indulge in a delicious brunch experience.
The hotel hosts a variety of monthly events, including the Fresh Organic Produce Market every Thursday from 10am to 2pm. If you are interested in exploring the property and organic gardens, tours are available by calling 239-949-0749.

This is why everyone comes to Bonita Springs, to enjoy our beautiful beaches! Walk along our sandy shores, collect seashells, bask in the sun, take a refreshing dip in the Gulf of Mexico, and witness our breathtaking sunsets. Fortunately, Bonita Beach Road stands out as one of the few roads in the area with direct beach access from I-75. Along this route, you’ll discover several unique beaches, each offering its own distinctive charm.
7. Barefoot Beach Preserve
Accessing Barefoot Beach Preserve involves driving through a gated community just off Bonita Beach Road. After passing through the front gate, you will continue for about half a mile to reach the Preserve entrance, marked by a gatehouse. Entry costs $10.00 per vehicle, payable only by credit card.
The Preserve welcomes you daily from 8am to sunset, offering three parking lots with various amenities and concessions. Activities range from beach outings and hiking trails to kayaking, canoeing, and educational programs.
Note: The preserve is currently in recovery following Hurricane Ian in September 2022. Limited parking and amenities are available as efforts are underway to restore full access to all the preserve has to offer.
8. Lovers Key State Park
Lovers Key State Park offers a prime opportunity to immerse yourself in nature’s beauty. Our favorite aspects of the park include its pristine beaches and scenic hiking trails. The park welcomes visitors year-round from 8am to sunset, with an entry fee of $8.00 per vehicle.
Opt for Lot 1, and you can hop on a complimentary tram ride to the southern beach or choose a leisurely walk to explore the mid- or northern-sections. An on-site concessionaire conveniently provides beach rentals, beverages, and snacks.
Whether you’re drawn to stunning landscapes, interested in shelling, or simply seeking relaxation by the beach, Lovers Key State Park delivers a perfect blend of nature and recreation.
9. Bonita Beach Park – A Public Beach
Bonita Beach Park is located at the northern turn of Bonita Beach Road, where it transitions into Hickory Boulevard. The Park offers a spacious parking lot at a rate of $2.00 per hour. It has convenient restroom facilities and a playground. Adjacent to Doc’s Beach House, you can enjoy food and drinks right on the beach.
10. Little Hickory Island Beach Park – Access 10
Heading north on Hickory Boulevard, just before the first bridge, you’ll find Access 10 on the left—a parking lot where you can conveniently park and access a serene stretch of the beach. This spot is perfect for leisurely walks, seashell collecting, and even surf fishing.
You can even watch dolphins playing in the nearby waters, a common sight from this beach location. Parking is available at a rate of $1.00 per hour, and amenities include restrooms and a sheltered picnic area.
11. Bonita Dog Beach
Situated just south of Lover’s Key State Park, Bonita Dog Beach provides an off-leash beach experience for your canine companion. Dogs can freely roam and play with others in the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The park, however, lacks amenities and it’s essential to responsibly pick up after your dog during your visit.

16. Congo River Golf
Mini golf is always one of our favorites, with our boys, even though they are grown-ups now. The Congo River Golf is an African adventure with waterfalls, rocks, caves, and a tropical rainforest.
They even have caymans (part of the gator family) that you can feed. It is open daily from 10am to 11pm and is on Tamiami Trail.
17. Golf Safari Mini Golf
Another one of our favorites, on Bonita Beach Road, is more fun for the family. The Golf Safari has life-size jungle animals and waterfalls. It is open daily from 10am to 10pm. Check out their website for discounted rates and coupons.
18. Bay Water Boat Rentals
One of the best ways to see and appreciate Bonita Springs is from the water. If you enjoy cruising, then a boat rental would be a fun thing to do in Bonita Springs. Bay Water is on Bonita Beach Road close to the beach area. You can rent for a full or half day and have a choice of a 22’ Pontoon or a 23’ Deck Boat (Hurricane) that can seat up to 10 people.

19. Sports Challenge America
If you are a sports enthusiast seeking an exciting challenge and the chance to win cash prizes, then Sports Challenge America in Bonita Springs is the place for you. Along the Imperial River, Bonita Nature Place spans 30 acres offering winding hiking trails throughout its scenic grounds. We were fortunate to visit the park on a Wednesday morning when the Learning Center was open. The knowledgeable staff shared insights on environmental awareness, local foliage, and wildlife.
The property has a butterfly garden, bee house, bat house, and a habitat for gopher tortoises. With its emphasis on environmental education, this is an excellent destination for exploration and appreciation of Southwest Florida’s natural beauty.
The Nature Place Trails are open daily from 8am to dusk. The Learning Center is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9am to 12pm.
21. Farmer Mike’s U-pick Farm
Family-owned and operated, Farmer Mike’s provides an enjoyable U-pick experience for everyone. You can harvest fruits, vegetables, and flowers while enjoying a fun tractor ride through the fields. The property features a market, food concession, and a picnic area.
